St Helens’ Council Leader, Councillor Anthony Burns, visited Shawton Group’s HQ in Newton-le-Willows last week to discuss the Council’s renewable goals and decarbonisation across St Helens and Liverpool City Region (LCR).

The Shawton Group – comprising Shawton Energy, Shawton Engineering, and Shawton Telecoms and Utilities – hosted the Leader alongside Deputy Leader, Councillor Seve Aspron-Gomez, Councillor Kate Groucutt, Cabinet Member for Business, Culture and Leisure, Councillor David Banks, and officers from St Helens Council.

The meeting focused on collaborative efforts towards decarbonisation across St Helens, with discussions highlighting the Council’s leadership in reducing emissions from public buildings, alongside Shawton Energy’s experience in helping businesses make their energy facilities greener and more cost-effective.

Both parties explored strategies for achieving Net Zero goals, lowering operational costs, and enhancing resilience in public infrastructure.

Shawton Group has operated out of Newton-le-Willows for over 30 years, with Shawton Energy established in 2016. The Group employs over 150 people and is committed to hiring over 10 apprentices annually.

Jamie Shaw, CEO of Shawton Energy, said:

“We were delighted to welcome representatives from the local council to our headquarters to discuss how we can support St Helens Council in reaching its Net Zero goals and advancing decarbonisation across the borough.

“As a proud St Helens business, it was great to be able to tell the councillors our story and show them, first hand, the great work we’re doing.

“We’re proud to support the Climate Commission in St Helens by sharing Net Zero insights with businesses throughout the borough.

“Collaborations like this underline the importance of businesses and local authorities working together to drive meaningful change.

“By investing in clean energy solutions, we’re not only supporting environmental sustainability but also delivering tangible benefits to the community through job creation, economic growth, and enhanced social value. Together, we’re building a greener, more resilient future for everyone, and we look forward to continuing to work together.”

Councillor Anthony Burns, Leader of St Helens Council, added:

“St Helens Borough and the wider City Region has made great strides in reducing emissions, with current levels half of those 20 years ago. But the challenge to get to net zero remains a big challenge for us all. That’s why it’s fantastic to meet with like-minded local businesses like Shawton Energy who share and support our vision and we will continue to take this great working relationship forward for a greener borough.”
