The Bannatyne Group

The Bannatyne Group, one of the UK’s leading wellness and health club operators, sought to reduce operational costs and enhance its environmental footprint across several sites. In an increasingly competitive market, Bannatyne identified sustainability as a key differentiator and sought to leverage solar energy to achieve long-term energy savings, align with its corporate social responsibility (CSR) goals, and safeguard against fluctuating energy prices.

Project Details

The Banntyne Group

With multiple sites spread across the UK, the project presented several logistical challenges, including varying site restrictions, the need to minimise disruption to day-to-day operations and ensuring the roll-out was streamlined and efficient to ensure the projects were operational in time. Bannatyne required a trusted partner capable of delivering a large-scale solar energy solution that was both cost-effective and tailored to the specific needs of each location. It was also decided that capital was better off invested into the health cubs, spas and hotels, and therefore they were looking for a fully funded solution where no upfront capital was needed.

The Process

01 Clear Solar Energy Goals

Bannatyne partnered with Shawton Energy, a leading provider of renewable energy solutions, to spearhead the solar roll-out. Shawton Energy’s extensive experience in handling multi-site solar projects, combined with its deep understanding of the energy needs of commercial properties, made it the ideal partner for this ambitious initiative.

02 Comprehensive Site Audits

Shawton Energy conducted detailed audits of all locations, assessing factors such as roof integrity, energy consumption patterns, and local grid connectivity. This data-driven approach enabled Shawton to design bespoke solar solutions for each site, maximising commercial return and delivering substantial renewable energy to its sites.

03 Customised Solar Installation

Tailored solar PV systems were installed across all sites, with the capacity ranging from 50kWp to 250kWp, depending on the size and energy demands of each location. Shawton Energy’s modular installation approach allowed for swift deployment with minimal disruption to Bannatyne’s operations, with over 10,500 panels modelled for install.

04 Ongoing Monitoring and Maintenance

Post-installation, Shawton Energy implemented an advanced monitoring system to track the performance of each solar installation in real time. This proactive approach ensures that Shawton Energy can optimise energy savings and quickly address any issues that may arise.

05 Fully Funded Solution with zero upfront investment -

Recognising the financial constraints and the desire for immediate energy savings, Shawton Energy proposed a fully funded solution through its Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). Under this arrangement, Shawton Energy financed the entire installation process, eliminating the need for upfront capital investment from Bannatyne. In return, Bannatyne agreed to purchase the generated solar power at a fixed, competitive rate lower than standard grid prices. This approach not only provided Bannatyne with immediate cost savings but also ensured price stability over the long term, further protecting them from future energy price volatility. Shawton’s PPA model allowed Bannatyne to reap the benefits of solar energy without financial risk, making it a win-win solution that aligned perfectly with its sustainability and financial objectives.

Could your business benefit from solar energy?

The Result

The solar rollout has been a resounding success, with The Bannatyne Group experiencing immediate benefits:

  • Significant Cost Savings: The solar installations have reduced Bannatyne’s energy costs by an average of 25% per site, contributing to substantial annual savings across the entire portfolio.
  • Environmental Impact: Bannatyne’s commitment to sustainability will reflect in the effectiveness of the project which will eventually reduce its carbon usage by almost 4,000 tonnes of C02 emissions annually, reinforcing its position as a leader in green business practices within the fitness industry.
  • Enhanced Brand Reputation: The successful implementation of solar energy across all the sites has not only improved Bannatyne’s bottom line but has also enhanced its reputation among eco-conscious consumers and investors.

The Bannatyne Group’s partnership with Shawton Energy has demonstrated the tangible benefits of large-scale solar energy adoption in the multi-site commercial sector.
