Iceland Wakefield

As the first food retailer globally to sign the Amazon Climate Pledge, committing to net zero carbon emissions by 2040, Iceland is accelerating its transition to clean energy. Working with Shawton Energy, the company installed a rooftop solar PV system at its Wakefield store as part of a wider rollout programme following successful projects at Crewe and Bridgend.

The Process

25 year Power Purchase Agreement

Shawton Energy delivered a turnkey rooftop solar PV installation through a 25 year Power Purchase Agreement, enabling Iceland to generate renewable electricity on-site without upfront capital investment. The Wakefield system includes 275 solar panels covering 611.5 m² of generation surface, with a total installed capacity of 141.63 kWp. Installation was completed on 19 February over a three-week period, carefully planned to minimise disruption to store operations.

Seamless Collaborative Effort

Close collaboration between Shawton Energy and Iceland’s sustainability and operations teams ensured safe installation and smooth integration within the existing retail environment.

Could your business benefit from solar energy?

The Result

The system generates approximately 125,160kWh of renewable electricity each year, delivering annual carbon savings of 27,904 kg of CO₂. By producing clean energy on site, the installation reduces reliance on grid electricity while improving long term energy cost stability. The Wakefield project marks another step in Iceland’s nationwide solar rollout and supports continued progress towards its Net Zero 2040 ambition.
