Following successful installations at Crewe, Bridgend and Wakefield, Iceland partnered with Shawton Energy to install a rooftop solar PV system at its York store, supporting reduced emissions and improved sustainability across its retail estate.

The Process
25 year Power Purchase Agreement
Shawton Energy delivered a turnkey rooftop solar PV solution under a 25 year Power Purchase Agreement, allowing Iceland to benefit from renewable electricity generation without upfront investment.
Seamless Collaborative Effort
The York installation consists of 289 solar panels covering 642.7 m² of generation surface and providing an installed capacity of 148.84 kWp. The project was completed on 26 February following a three week installation programme, with works managed to ensure minimal impact on daily operations.
Shawton Energy worked closely with Iceland’s internal teams to ensure compliance with all safety standards and seamless system integration.

The Result
The York solar installation generates approximately 125,160 kWh of renewable electricity annually, saving 26,530 kg of CO₂ each year.
The system reduces exposure to energy price volatility while lowering operational emissions. As part of Iceland’s ongoing solar rollout, the York project demonstrates how renewable energy can be successfully integrated into live retail environments while supporting the company’s Net Zero 2040 commitment.
